TOY STORY 5
PONCHO WOODY

Most-Loved Edition · Walmart Exclusive

Walmart committed to a Toy Story 5 exclusive on short notice, driven by viral fan demand for a "bald" Woody, as seen in Toy Story 5. Packaging had six weeks from kickoff to art release, a window that had to absorb research, design, internal pitch(es), licensor approval(s), illustration, and production across two continents. Premium finishes usually require lead time that a schedule like that does not have.

The tone was the harder problem. The figure exists because fans wanted to see Woody at his most worn down, and the packaging had to honor that without demeaning his character.

I built the design around his journey rather than his condition: worn stock, an 80s Olin Mills portrait montage to signal reflection, and a silhouette with the poncho blowing and his gaze off toward the sunset. The bald spot is handled on the backer with a spot UV mirror showing the back of his head. It is not called out directly.

To move quickly, I directed an illustrator through blueline sketches and got options in front of decision makers early. Concepts were vetted with the internal Toy Story team, then taken to the licensor. Once a direction was selected, refinements ran in parallel with production, with notes and visual references going to the Mattel of Asia team daily. While layouts were in production, I art directed the photography crew shooting assets for packaging and ecommerce. A late deco change meant reshooting the product minutes before the file released to the printer.

It shipped on schedule with spot UV and gold foil intact. Walmart's retail copy sells the packaging finishes as a product feature, which is uncommon for a program built on this timeline.
